Sustainable Development Organization (SDO) is committed to protect Pakistan Natural Environment and supporting communities in building a more sustainable and climate resilient future.
1. Biodiversity Conservation
Pakistan is home to a remarkable diversity of wildlife, plants and ecosystems including many threatened and endemic species. However, biodiversity is increasingly affected by habitat loss deforestation, unsustainable resource use, infrastructure development, pollution and the impacts of climate change.
SDO works to support the “Protection of wildlife and their natural habitats” through community engagement, environmental awareness, field based conservation research and collaboration with relevant institutions. Our work aims to strengthen community stewardship of natural resources, promote awareness of wildlife conservation, and contribute to the long-term protection of threatened species and their habitats.
Forests are essential for soil and biodiversity conservation, water regulation, climate resilience, and the well-being of local communities. Deforestation and land degradation can result in habitat loss, soil erosion, declining ecosystem services and reduced availability of natural resources.
SDO promotes “reforestation native tree plantation, and ecosystem restoration” in degraded and environmentally sensitive areas. Particular attention is given to areas affected by deforestation, and soil erosion, including river banks and stream corridors, that provide important habitats and movement routes for wildlife. Our reforestation initiatives aim to:
· Restore degraded habitats and improve ecological connectivity.
· Reduce soil erosion and protect vulnerable riverbanks and stream corridors.
· Improve habitat and shelter for wild animals and birds.
· Support healthier and more resilient ecosystems.
· Contribute to carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation.
· Engage local communities, particularly young people, in practical environmental conservation.
3. Safe Drinking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
Access to safe drinking water is fundamental to healthy communities. Although Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is rich in fresh water resources, increasing anthropogenic pressure, inadequate sanitation, pollution, land use changes and climate related impacts are placing growing pressure on the quality and availability of local water resources. SDO works with rural and vulnerable communities to promote “safe drinking water, improved sanitation, hygiene awareness and responsible water-resource management.
Our activities focus on community awareness and practical measures to protect springs, streams, underground water and other freshwater sources form contamination. We encourage communities to adopt responsible practices and reduce activities that can compromise water quality, including indiscriminate disposal of solid waste, inappropriate use of agricultural chemicals near water resources, poorly located sanitation facilities, and disposal of waste or slaughtering remains close to the freshwater resources. Through community engagement and awareness, SDO aims to strengthen local ownership of freshwater resources and promote healthier, safer, and more sustainable water systems.
4. Climate Change and Resilience
Climate change is increasingly affecting ecosystems, water resources, agriculture, livelihoods and communities across Pakistan. In mountainous regions such as AJK, changing precipitation patters, seasonal shifts, prolonged dry periods and unpredictable weather can place additional pressure on ecosystems.
SDO is particularly concerned about “water scarcity, hydrological drought, and the long term availability of fresh water resources.” Many streams, springs and small water channels that historically provided reliable water are experiencing reduced flows or seasonal drying, highlighting the need for improved water-resource management and climate adaptation. We are focusing on raising community awareness about climate-related risks, promoting sustainable water-resource management, encouraging nature based solutions that strengthen ecosystem and engaging local communities and relevant institutions in climate action.
By linking environmental conservation with community participation, SDO seeks to strengthen the resilience of both “People and ecosystems” to current and future climate related challenges.
